Adventure Australia Rottnest Island

By: Oze Parrot

Rottnest Island lies in the Indian Ocean off the west coast of Australia and is just 19 km from the Port of Fremantle. The island is 11 kilometres long, 4.5 kilometres wide and occupies an area of 19km sq. The island has a small floating population of employees who cater for up to 2850 overnight guests and 5,000 day trippers.

As an Adventure Travel Destination, Rottnest Island has a host of activities to take part in including: Scuba-Diving, Diving for Crayfish, Beach Fishing, Kite Surfing, Golfing, Sailing, Water Skiing, Snorkeling, Surfing, Wind Surfing, Para Sailing, Mountain Biking and Trekking.

Rottnest Island is an idyllic Adventure Destination that boasts some of the best beaches in the world, it has a casual, relaxed atmosphere and a moderately warm climate. There are coral reefs and thirteen sunken shipwrecks, in the waters around the island that support all types of marine life, making it a Mecca for scuba divers, underwater photographers and fishermen.

Gun emplacements were built during World War Two on an elevated Position near the centre of Rottnest Island called, Oliver Hill. Cannons were mounted there in order to protect the Port of Fremantle during the war years. A light rail system was built to carry materials, equipment and ammunition from the jetty at Thomson Bay to the gun battery. After an extensive renovation program of the railway system, the gun bunkers and the surrounds, the site has now become a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can take the train for a leisurely trip to the top of the hill and be taken on a guided tour of the gun emplacement area that includes the bunkers and tunnels.

Rottnest Island is classified as an "A" Class reserve and as such, there are no private motor vehicles allowed on Rottnest Island, so in order to see the sights it is a case of either bike or hike. The road journey around the island is about 24km where the traveller can capture an assortment of stunning views of beaches, bays and native fauna and an indigenous marsupial, called the quokka.

Visit Rottnest Island, an Adventure Travel Destination.
