Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, is a World Heritage listed site in the Northern Territory of Australia that includes the huge sandstone rock formation, which the traditional Aboriginal owners of the land call, Uluru. The park is located in a remote area of central Australia, being 440 kilometers from the nearest town of Alice Springs, and about 1430 kilometers away from the capital city of Darwin.
From the Weipa road, there is a link to Aurukun, an Aboriginal community of about 1,000 people that is situated on the west coast of Cape York and lies about 100km south of Weipa. Aurukun was originally a mission station that was established by the Presbyterian Church. These days however, the Aboriginal people hold a lease on Aurukun Shire which is controlled by members of an elected Aboriginal Council. Visitors are required to obtain a permit to stay at Aurukun.
